AWS Storage Gateway

The data is moving to the cloud, many enterprises are moving to the cloud in full swing. Instead of refactoring the whole set of application companies start their cloud journey with Lift and shift and few organisations are using multi-cloud.

If you are using a hybrid cloud and wanted to use the cloud volumes in your on-premise data centre, you can use the AWS Storage gateway’s virtually unlimited storage.

Storage gateway is the hybrid cloud storage solution which is deployed in the on-premise environment and utilizes the cloud storage like EBS, S3 and Glacier and access it through the virtual appliance using the protocols like NFS, SMB and iSCSI. It also provides the local caching to increase the performance and also supports encryption and data protection.

The storage gateway can be used for use cases like

  • Migration
  • Archiving
  • Disaster Recovery.

And the storage gateway is supported in three formats

  • Tape Gateway
  • File Gateway
  • Volume Gateway

Your applications connect to the service through a virtual machine or hardware gateway appliance using standard storage protocols, such as NFS, SMB, and iSCSI. The gateway connects to AWS storage services, such as Amazon S3, Amazon S3 Glacier, Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive, Amazon EBS, and AWS Backup, providing storage for files, volumes, snapshots, and virtual tapes in AWS.

The service includes a highly-optimized data transfer mechanism, with bandwidth management, automated network resilience, and efficient data transfer.

We will discuss in more detail about the each storage gateway types in upcoming posts.
